Understanding hearing loss

Roughly one in three adults over age 65 has some degree of hearing loss, and by age 75 that number climbs to nearly half. The earlier you understand what is happening with your hearing, the more options you have.

The three main types of hearing loss

Sensorineural hearing loss

This is the most common type of hearing loss in adults. It happens when the tiny hair cells in the inner ear, or the auditory nerve, become damaged. Common causes include aging, noise exposure, certain medications, and genetics. Sensorineural hearing loss is typically permanent but very treatable with modern hearing aids.

Conductive hearing loss

Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound cannot pass efficiently through the outer or middle ear. Causes include earwax blockage, fluid buildup, ear infections, or issues with the small bones of the middle ear. This type of hearing loss is often medically treatable, and we will refer you to an ENT when appropriate.

Mixed hearing loss

Mixed hearing loss is a combination of sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. It requires a careful diagnostic evaluation to identify the right treatment approach.

Early warning signs to watch for

• Frequently asking people to repeat themselves
• Turning up the volume on the TV or phone louder than others prefer
• Struggling to follow conversations in restaurants or group settings
• Ringing, buzzing, or hissing in your ears (tinnitus)
• Feeling exhausted after social gatherings from the effort of listening
• Missing parts of conversations, especially with women and children

Why treating hearing loss matters

Untreated hearing loss is more than an inconvenience. Research from Johns Hopkins and other major institutions has linked untreated hearing loss to:

• Increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia
• Higher rates of social isolation and depression
• Greater risk of falls and balance issues
• Reduced quality of life and relationships

The good news is that treating hearing loss with properly fit hearing aids has been shown to slow cognitive decline, improve mood, and restore connection with family and community.
